Looking for opportunities to volunteer and find service opportunities in Leuven? Look no further than ‘Serve the City’ (STC), an organization which connects student and residents of Leuven with chances to be actively engaged in serving others in the city.

“incredibly wholesome experience and also a good way to meet new people who have the same vision as I do, to serve and to be a part of a community.” about STC's lunch event.

Kazu, KU Leuven Student

Last November, Serve The City (STC), a local organization in Leuven organized its first Community Lunch, as a way to show appreciation for its volunteers and the student community. Several volunteers cooked up some amazing, homemade, and popular dishes from their own countries. Guests enjoyed delicious food from China, Korea, Africa, Nepal, and Brazil! The lunch event was an opportunity to learn more about volunteering in Leuven and the chance to share the organization’s vision to other prospective volunteers. The organization also raised money from the generous guests who took time out on a Sunday afternoon to participate. The amount raised covered the costs of the event and also to fund future projects.

Plenty of guests showed their competitive spirit, fighting their way to grab the mic and to voice their answers. All in good fun of course. Everyone participated in a quiz with topics ranging from the organization’s history to pop culture. Did you know who wrote the song ‘Imagine’? The winners received amazing prizes including a box of amazing Belgian chocolate and bottles of wine.

According to Project Coordinator Hugo Sobreira, a little less than 100 people overall participated at last month’s event, which represented a wide group of people from the city of Leuven, ranging from members of ICEL (International Church of Evangelicals of Leuven), former volunteers, and approximately 30% were KU Leuven students. Hugo also mentioned that his overall impression of the reception by the guests was great. One of the active volunteers and a member of ICEL, KU Leuven student Kazu, said said that the lunch event was an “incredibly wholesome experience and also a good way to meet new people who have the same vision as I do, to serve and to be a part of a community.” Another KU Leuven student, Yan, shared that same sentiment. He found out about Serve The City during the university’s orientation week and thought that “it's an amazing event to get together and to meet new people and see what the city is all about. And it makes people bring closer together when you share food” with each other.

The organization achieved the set-forth goals, which were

  • 1) to create awareness about STC Leuven and other volunteering organizations in town,
  • 2) to create a sense of community and
  • 3) to raise funds.

According to their website, Serve the City is a global movement of volunteers showing kindness in practical ways to people in need. They partner with different social associations in the city such as homeless shelters, refugee centers, and orphanages to offer help and support. The organization mobilizes volunteers to serve in different roles relating to areas such as sports, music, arts and crafts, and meal preparation. They are a bridge between people who want to help and volunteer, and organizations that serve people in need. Their dream is to ‘cross the line’ and serve as many as they can.
